Honoring a Legend: Senator Warnock and HBCU Choirs Pay Tribute to Richard Smallwood

Raphael Warnock and HBCU choirs bring “Total Praise” to Capitol Hill in tribute to Richard SmallwoodIn a poignant moment of unity and celebration, Senator Raphael Warnock joined forces with the Howard University Gospel Choir and the Metropolitan Baptist Church Choir to pay tribute to the late gospel music icon, Richard Smallwood. The event, held on Capitol Hill, was a testament to the enduring power of music to bring people together and transcend generations.

A Legacy of Faith and Music
Richard Smallwood's life and work were celebrated through a bipartisan Senate resolution, recognizing his contributions to gospel music. Born in Atlanta in 1948, Smallwood began playing the piano at age five and went on to earn a music degree from Howard University. He founded the Richard Smallwood Singers in the late 1970s and later transitioned to the choir Vision in the 1990s.

A Musical Genius and Giant of Gospel Music
Senator Warnock described Smallwood as 'a musical genius and a giant of the gospel music world.' He noted that Smallwood's music has carried listeners through hardship, often lingering longer in memory than sermons. The senator reflected on Smallwood's roots and reach, pointing to his deep ties to both Howard University and Metropolitan Baptist Church.

A Tribute to a Life Well-Lived
The tribute came just weeks after Smallwood's death at age 77 from complications related to kidney failure. The event was a celebration of his life, music, and legacy, which includes eight Grammy nominations and multiple Dove and Stellar Awards. His sound is rooted in gospel tradition, but his reach extends far beyond it, with Whitney Houston recording his song 'I Love the Lord' for The Preacher's Wife soundtrack.

A Lasting Impact on Music and Culture
Smallwood's music has had a lasting impact on both gospel and popular culture. His songs often transcend genres, introducing his work to audiences who might never have set foot in a Black church. Destiny's Child incorporated 'Total Praise' into their 2007 a cappella 'Gospel Medley,' carrying his music into global pop culture.

The tribute to Richard Smallwood on Capitol Hill was a powerful reminder of the enduring power of music to bring people together and transcend generations. As Senator Warnock so eloquently put it, Smallwood's legacy is 'a musical genius and a giant of the gospel music world.' His life and work continue to inspire and uplift us, leaving an indelible mark on the world of music and beyond.
