Google Settles $68 Million Lawsuit Over Alleged Eavesdropping by Voice Assistant

Google to pay $68 million over allegations its voice assistant eavesdropped on usersIn a major settlement, tech giant Google has agreed to pay $68 million to resolve allegations that its voice assistant had been secretly recording users' conversations without their consent. This move comes as part of a class-action lawsuit filed against the company, which claimed that Google's devices were eavesdropping on private conversations, including those about financial issues and personal decisions.

Google to Pay $68 Million in Settlement
The settlement was reached after several Google device owners filed a lawsuit against the company, alleging that their conversations had been recorded without their knowledge. The plaintiffs claimed that Google's voice assistant would often record conversations even when users did not use an activation phrase like 'Hey Google.' This has raised concerns about user privacy and the potential misuse of sensitive information.

Similarities to Apple Class-Action Lawsuit
The agreement is reminiscent of a similar class-action lawsuit filed against Apple, which alleged that its Siri voice assistant had eavesdropped on private or confidential conversations. In this case, Apple device owners are receiving payments from the $95 million settlement, ranging from about $8 to $40 per person.

How Consumers Will Be Affected
Consumers will be able to submit claims for up to three Google devices, although how much individuals receive will depend on how many claims are submitted. The agreement also requires approval by U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman before it can take effect.

The $68 million settlement marks a significant step towards addressing concerns about user privacy and the potential misuse of sensitive information. As technology continues to advance, it is essential for companies like Google to prioritize transparency and accountability in their practices. This move serves as a reminder that users have the right to know how their data is being used and protected.
